Hardap
You should, at least once in your life, see the purple and white milk lilies (Crinum palodosum) on the Sandhofpan, about 40 km north of Maltahöhe, in bloom. It’s a rare spectacle.
It only happens when there’s exceptional rains in January or February. The pan should have at least 15 cm water. After the rains it takes about a week to ten days for the lilies to start blooming. And they only last a week – so you have to be quick.
The best way to find out when it will be raining, is to phone Arno Rahn at the Maltahöhe Hotel. (You’ll be making a mistake anyway if you don’t stop in Maltahöhe for a Tafel Lager at the hotel – apparently it’s the oldest hotel in Namibia and a place with lots of stories.) Maltahöhe is also an excellent stopover if you’re headed for Sossusvlei, or even Walvis Bay, Swakopmund or Henties.
