Hire a 4x4 in Namibia
Fly to Walvis Bay and hire a fully equiped Toyota Hilux double cab
Namibia is 4x4 country. If you happen to drive a VW Golf or you’ve flown to Windhoek, the solution is to hire a double cab.

It’s easy to hire a 4x4 in Namibia, and you need not even shlepp your camping gear from home. Most operators are able to offer a vehicle with a roof tent, water can, gas cooker and even a salad bowl, if you wanted one. We popped in at Basie Oosthuizen’s Crossroads 4x4 Hire to find out how it works.
What’s available? You have a choice of two Toyota Hilux double cabs, the 2.7-litre petrol model and the 2.5-litre diesel. Yes, with air conditioning.
How much? R800 a day (one to three days) for the petrol model, with 300 km per day free (and R2 a km thereafter), and R900 for the diesel model. The longer the hire contract, the cheaper the day tariff. For example, from Day 4, the daily tariff drops to R750 with unlimited kilometres. If you take it for five days you get the roof tent and camping gear for nothing.
Does that include everything? All basic camping gear (you can even get sleeping bags), but if you want a fridge, it would cost R75 a day more.
Say the vehicle gives problems? You phone Crossroads and the company sees to it that you are back on the road within 24 hours. If you get stuck, you use the recovery equipment issued with the vehicle. Insurance is included in the hire charges.
