Campsites outside Etosha

If you want to cut costs, camp outside the park. There are a few possibilities near the Andersson gate (at Okaukuejo) and Von Lindequist gate (near Namutoni).

Etosha is still at the top of most people’s list of things to see in Namibia, but many can no longer afford it. Riéth van Schalkwyk shares a few campsites outside the park that won’t hurt your wallet so much.

Campers can also make use of the pool. The view from the thatched restaurant and bar over the mopani veld is beautiful

The Oshebeena Bar is a fun restaurant and bar. You can eat under the stars or grab a seat by a huge fire where guests can dance to the beat of a drum

Camp at one of these three camps if you want to be a spectator at Etosha’s most popular.

Tandala Ridge
Talk to the experts
The farm Windpoort, on which Tandala Ridge is situated, belongs to Tim and Laurel Osborne. These two American ecologists fell in love with Namibia years ago while doing research in Etosha.
Tim is an expert on birds and knows all about kori bustards. Also ask him to tell you about the hectares of stromatolites which occur here. These blue-green fossilised algae are apparently 650 million years old and among the oldest fossilised records of life on earth. Because there are no lions or elephants, you can explore the area on foot.
The campsites each has a table, braai and tap and there are hot showers.
Where: As the crow flies, Windpoort is only 10 km from the Andersson gate, but if you drive there it’s about an hour’s drive south of Etosha.
Cost: R100 per vehicle, regardless of the number of passengers.

Mondjila Camp
A view of mopani veld
This campsite belongs to Johan and Leonie Swanepoel and has plenty of grass and shade. There are five campsites and you can comfortably pitch two tents on each stand (with its own braai and power point). Ablutions are shared.
Campers can also make use of the pool. The view from the thatched restaurant and bar over the mopani veld is beautiful. This camp is also a good overnight stop if you’re headed for Kaokoland or Damaraland.
Where: Take the C38 to Outjo from the Andersson gate and turn left onto the D2779. It’s about 32 km from the gate.
Cost: R60 per person and R30 for children (12 and younger)

Etosha Safari camp
Let your hair down at the Oshebeena Bar

This campsite is only a few kilometres from the Andersson gate, so you can be in the park early morning and back at your campsite by sunset.
The Oshebeena Bar is a fun restaurant and bar. You can eat under the stars or grab a seat by a huge fire where guests can dance to the beat of a drum. The “shebeen” is an interesting artwork-in-the-making with odds and ends which Manni Goldbeck collects and puts up here.
Where: 10 km south of the Andersson gate on the C38 between Outjo and Okaukuejo
Cost: R85 per person.

Each campsite has a power point and its own ablutions with hot water. You share a large lawn with other campers.

If you want to visit the waterholes of Namutoni, on the eastern edge of Etosha, consider to pitch your tent at one of these places.

Onguma Safari Camp
Fisher’s Pan in your back yard
Onguma safari camp was the first time I saw a cheetah in daytime. There are also black rhino and more than 300 bird species. This nature reserve borders on the east of Etosha’s well-known Fisher’s Pan, and there are lovely mopani trees and limestones.
The six campsites are fenced, because this is lion country. Each campsite has a power point and its own ablutions with hot water. You share a large lawn with other campers.
Have a bite to eat at the restaurant, which has a view of the waterhole. If you want to spoil yourself, book a room in one of the lodges. It’s among the most beautiful in the country.
Also talk to Pieter Oosthuizen; he grew up in Grootfontein and has managed the Bush Camp for five years.
Where: Drive 5 km on the C38 from the Von Lindequist gate and then turn left at the Onguma sign. The camp is 3 km further.
Cost: R125 per person

Sachsenheim
Camp on a farm

On Burt and Maria Sachse’s farm Sachsenheim there are campsites on grass with many trees.
Each of the seven stands has its own braai, but shares ablutions. If you feel you’ve braaied enough, you can order a plate of farm food. Campers can also make use of the swimming pool.
There’s plenty of game on the farm, from giraffe and kudu to zebra and duiker.
Where: 25 km from the Namutoni gate, on the B1 to Tsumeb
Cost: R60 per person and R15 per vehicle
