Eye it, don’t buy it
In the old days before South Africa had TV, window-shopping was the thing to do on a Sunday night. You ogled but didn't spend a cent.
It’s still free! Choose an interesting city street. In Cape Town you could head up Kloof Street, the city's restaurant strip. You’ll find a Vida e Caffé, where local celebs gather (we’ve spotted Francois and Nerine Pienaar sneaking in there in the early morning).
Walk on past Arnold’s, the breakfast place of choice for people on a budget, the Mount Nelson Hotel’s back entrance, and a few wonderful art galleries.
Check out all the delicious treats at Melissa’s and dream about buying one of the penthouses displayed in the estate agent’s windows.
You can also drop in at the Continental Butchery, a German establishment that sells some of the best meat to be had in the city. Before you know it, you’ll be at the top of the street where fairylights are draped in the oak tree outside a Moroccan restaurant called Fabulous. Across the street is Baccini’s, one of the best places in town for a pizza. Time for a glass of wine and a bite to eat.
