Cool pool: River Still Guest Farm, Groot-Marico, North West
At River Still the Groot-Marico flows by solemnly, deep and clear. Trees line the river on the left and right. In the summer, the top layer of the water is nice and warm, but the deeper you go the cooler it gets (and it’s deep – your feet won’t touch the ground).
There’s a rope to swing out over the river and scare the yellowfish with cannonballs, and there’s a floating wooden structure that makes getting in and out of the water very easy. Paddle in a canoe, fish (if you catch a black bass, don’t throw it back – they’re endangering the indigenous fish), float on your back or just sit around watching birds – the trees on the river bank teem with feathered friends. Stay in a spacious stone house, and do a meditation or drumming course with owner Jacques du Plessis. Ask him if he has some mampoer left – he distils citrus mampoer. A swim in the river at River Still will recharge your batteries for a year.
How to get there: Follow the sign at the post office in Groot-Marico’s main street. After 4km, turn left. The guesthouse is 2km down the hill (drive slowly; the road is bumpy).
Cost: Day visitors pay R25 per person (you can hike, swim and braai). Self-catering: R220 per person per night on weekends); R150 during the week.

Go says: The Groot-Marico is as clean as they come – you can even drink the water.
