Pack a picnic basket

Always keep a picnic basket with the necessary cutlery and plastic glasses in the cupboard and next time the weather is good, buy a pack of biscuits, a tin of mussels, nice cheese, a bottle of cold white wine and a few lollipops. Throw out a picnic blanket near a dam, under a few trees or at the seaside.

In Cape Town, have a picnic or braai at Oudekraal between Bakoven and Llandudno. On a quiet day you might have the beach to yourself while your kids spend all day rock-hopping. Entry is R10 (free with a Wild Card). Contact: (021 438 9555)

Bloemfontein’s historic Oliewenhuis in Harry Smith Street is also worth a visit. Its never-ending green lawns are a favourite with the locals, especially on weekends. Entry is free.
