When you pitch a tent at Ferndale, part of the deal is free firewood.

Jon Minster took some time out at Ferndale.

Just when you thought you’ve explored every corner of South Africa, along comes the Henderson valley, east of the Kei River between Cathcart and Stutterheim – a landscape so rugged and empty it takes your breath away.
Ferndale is a working angora, sheep and stud cattle farm, but owner Butch James (yes, he is related to the rugby player) has turned a section of prime river frontage along the Thomas River into a five-star campsite.
There are no demarcated sites, but it’s unlikely you’ll be fighting for space. Ablution facilities are simple but spotless, there are power points spaced throughout the campsite, and there’s a central boma with a fridge, freezer, electric kettle and toaster.

GO! says: There are 4x4 trails on the farm, as well as some great mountain-bike tracks.

Where: In the Henderson valley, about 25 km from Cathcart off the N6 along a good dirt road.
Facilities: Power points; clean ablution facilities with hot-water showers; boma; bonfire and braai spots. There’s one large self-catering chalet.
Cost: R50 per person per night; children under 5 stay free. 082 784 4979; 045 843 1741; www.ferndale4x4.co.za
