Seaside towns

1. Langebaan
Hire a boathouse for a weekend and enjoy the lagoon. Throw a fish on the fire and enjoy the company of good friends while breathing in the fresh sea air. I am also crazy about the open-air restaurant, Die Strandloper, where you can eat the best seafood – from snoek and paella potjiekos to waterblommetjiebredie – while your toes play in the sand. My mouth is watering!

2. Hermanus
Every time I go to Hermanus I am lucky enough to see a whale and every time is as exciting as the very first time. Friends of mine live in this beautiful town and there’s nothing better than to play with their dogs on the beach. The Hemel-en-Aarde wine route is amazing – there is little that can match the combination of a gorgeous view and a good glass of wine from a local winery.

3. Knysna
Go and sail on the lagoon. You can hire boast and kayaks, but there are also numerous ferries that take visitors around the lagoon. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can row between the Knysna Heads to the open ocean. That’s a bit challenging for me, so I prefer to rather sit in one of the many restaurants, eat oysters and look at the Heads.

4. Waenhuiskrans
A pretty fishing village with the most striking white chalkstone houses that it is so well known for. Take a simple stroll to the harbour and see the fishing boats coming in. The water isn’t too cold, and you can have a swim or a surf. And you certainly can’t go to Waenhuiskrans without visiting the Waenhuiskrans cave. No matter how many times you’ve done it before.

5. Paternoster
To me, the tranquillity is the best part of this town. If you’re looking for more than just going for a walk on the beach or just lying and watching the sea all day, like me, then a trip along one of the paths or foot or mountain bike is an alternative. The Columbine Nature Reserve is also just around the corner.
