Beef burgers
Few things beat a juicy hamburger. And if you’ve made it yourself, it tastes even better. You can fry the patties over the coals or in a pan.
You need (for 8 people)
• 1 slice bread
• milk in which to soak the bread
• 500 g minced beef
• 1 onion, finely chopped
• 1 green apple (Granny Smith), peeled and grated
• 2 teaspoons mustard seeds
• freshly ground black pepper, to taste
• 1 egg, beaten
Here’s how
1. Milk bath. Soak the bread in a little milk until it’s soggy.
2. All together now. Mix all the ingredients together with your hands (or if you have a well-stocked kitchen, use a food processor).
3. Cool it. Wet your hands and shape the meat mixture into 8 patties. Place them in the fridge to firm up. If you don’t have a camping fridge, place them in a cool box or leave them in a cool place until you start braaiing.
4. Now to the braai. Braai the patties over moderate coals on an open grill.
5. Build a burger. Make your own burgers with bread rolls, salad, sliced tomatoes and, if you prefer, a tablespoon of tomato pesto.
Go! says: Grease the grid with oil or spray it with Spray ’n Cook so the meat doesn’t stick. I usually cover the grid with a layer of foil and braai the burgers until they’re firm before sliding them onto the grid.

Are you sure this is right, 500g of meat for 8 people, thats 62.5g per person, adding the apple and onion you will have a burger of well under 100g, it sounds very small, or am confused?
