THE VERDICT
- Dawie: “The meat tastes almost like meat, but with a bit of rubber added. This flavour is one of Back Country’s better ones, even if the clove flavour is stronger than the curry.”
- Esma: “This doesn’t look, smell or taste like curry at all. It’s not a patch on Mom’s beef curry, rather like a weak hostel stew. I’ll eat it only if I’m really hungry.”
- Emile: “The flavours taste artificial and I couldn’t taste anything reminding me of curry. The animal that provided the meat was, however, younger than 90.”
The tasters
DAWIE VERWEY - Photographer and hiker
Dawie is an old hand when it comes to hiking. His favourites are spaghetti bolognaise and a good Thai green curry. He says he doesn’t set foot in the veld without a packet of Pella dates and good coffee in his backpack.
EMILE JOUBERT - Food fundi
Emile is a meat and wine man. He doesn’t hike, because both products are too heavy to carry in a backpack. The most arduous legwork he’s done recently was when he pressed his first wine, Galjoengat Pinotage, the old-fashioned way.
ESMA LE ROUX - Journalist and hiker
Esma has been hiking since she was seven years old. Her favourite food is pizza. On an overnight hiking trip she treats herself by taking along dough for griddle cakes and a few small tubs of jam for the first evening’s meal.
