In an ideal world, our bumper Christmas gift issue would be a complete waste of paper, since you would have already bought wonderful, thoughtfully selected presents for Aunty Mavis, Uncle Jerry et al throughout the year.
But I suspect, like me, you’ve probably left everything to the last minute (again), and are now scrambling to beat the end-of-year shopping rush while simultaneously attempting to tie up work, book the dogs into kennels and decide whether to serve ham or turkey for Christmas lunch. Phew!
The good news is that we’ve taken care of the prezzies for you this year. Well, not actually buying and wrapping them, of course, but in terms of sparing you the inevitable head-scratching and hand-wringing routine that always seems to precede Christmas shopping.
Below you’ll find 50 great gift ideas chosen by the staff at go! We’ve covered every base, from the kids to Gran and Gramps, with plenty of options to suit tastes, interests and wallets. No socks or soap-on-a-rope, promise!
Well, all that remains is for me to wish you happy holidays and all the best for 2009.
I hope you’ve had as much fun reading about outdoor gear this year as I’ve had writing about it.

1. Applo Shake Torch
For little hands
We tested this torch thoroughly: One shake and you have light. Any child who gets their hands on one will be entertained for hours in the dark – there are no batteries to go flat.
Price: R100 at Builders Warehouse.
Contact: 0860 2845 3377; www.builderswarehouse.co.za
Go! says: A great gift for grown-ups too – especially the ones who are already a bit shaky.

2. Lap tray (with beanbag)
Outdoor dining
Ever tried to juggle a plate of potjiekos on your lap while trying to wedge your wine glass against the leg of a camp chair? Don’t stress. Only a few people can manage this and they’re all women.
This lap tray is a great gift for the kind of camper who likes a few creature comforts. There’s a beanbag attached to the underside of the tray, which allows you to level it comfortably on your lap so that you can keep your stew on the plate.
Price: R125 for a cherrywood tray from Dis-Chem; R150 for a pair from CampWorld.
Contact: Dis-Chem stores or CampWorld dealers (there are 36 outlets around the
country). www.dis-chem.co.za; www.campworld.co.za
Go! says: Ideal for caravanners who like to eat breakfast in bed.

3. Picnic bag in ammo box
Veld kitchen
This picnic bag is a great gift idea for your parents who are planning a post-retirement tour of the country.
It takes your whole kitchen: pots, pans, cutlery, crockery, glasses and mugs, wooden spoons, egg lifters, chef’s knives…There’s even place for the salt and pepper and Mrs Balls.
Price: R277 for the picnic bag and R160 for the ammo box from Outdoor Warehouse.
Contact: Outdoor Warehouse 021 462 4444; Campcover 021 905 5005

4. Capestorm kiddies’ clothing
Snug as a bug in a rug
Capestorm now has a unisex kiddies’ range for children between the ages of 5 and 10. We found a lively child to try out the fleece top and pants, which were cosy but neither baggy nor restrictive. The pants are made from the same material as Capestorm pants for men: They’re light, strong and dry quickly. They should survive tree climbing and mud puddles.
Price: Mini Puffadder fleece R155; Bundu Basher tech longs R225 from Capestorm
stores.
Contact: 021 761 2021; www.capestorm.co.za
Go! says: This local company’s outdoor clothing is as good as anything you might find overseas.

5. Collapsible crate
Painless packing
We know that a crate isn’t a romantic gift, but sometimes what you really want is a practical present. Any keen camper will appreciate one of these crates, which fold down for easy storage in the garage.
Price: R40 from Builders Warehouse.
Contact: 0860 2845 3377; www.builderswarehouse.co.za

7. Disney sleeping bag, torch & water bottle
Hook them while they’re young
The best way to get little people into the mood for camping is to buy them their own sleeping bag and torch. Disney makes very cute Spiderman and Winnie the Pooh sleeping bags, complete with a backpack, and a water bottle and torch in side pockets.

the large retail stores.
Contact: Metro Home Centre in Menlyn Retail Park 012 326 6460
Go! says: You could also just buy a pretty sleeping bag and a separate torch. Pick ’n Pay sells fairy torches with fake gemstones around the lens for R60 – a hit with little girls.

8. Butte Torch Tongs
Light sabre

Braai tongs with a torch? It sounds as obvious as a bakkie with an engine.
The LED lamp and battery sit comfortably between the tong blades, so you can inspect your chops and wors while you turn them. The electronics are sealed and the battery housing is removable, so washing the tongs is not a problem.
Price: R200.
Contact: Todd Broome Utensils 021 712 5004; 083 626 5816; www.butte.co.za
Go! says: Okay, it’s a gadget, but the family braai master will love it.

9. LK’s Chicken Roaster
Balance a boozy bird

It’s tricky to cook a whole chicken on the coals. Buy this chicken roaster for your buddy who has served you half-cooked, half-burnt drumsticks.
The hood makes it possible to roast a whole bird over an open wood or gas braai. The centre well has space for a 340 ml can for a juicy “beer bird”, and the drip collector prevents a mess.
Price: R240.
Contact: LK Products 021 905 0640; www.lks.co.za
Go! says: LK’s is a good place to shop for gifts – its design team sleeps, eats and lives for braaiing!

10. GSI Outdoors Lexan Java Press
(Good) coffee in the outdoors

This coffee plunger might look like it’s made from glass, but it’s actually moulded from virtually unbreakable plastic that looks like glass (Lexan polycarbonate), so it’s ideal for campers and hikers who can’t do without their daily dose of mocha java.
Price: R292 from Mountain Mail Order.
Contact: 021 683 6026; www.mountainmailorder.co.za
Go! says: This one makes enough for one person (300 ml), but you can also buy a 900 ml version for about R365.

Price: R6295 at 4x4Mega World.

Peter Slingsby’s new Cederberg map provides the same accurate, easy-to-use cartography that have made his “The Maps” series such a firm favourite with outdoor lovers. It now comes with a waterproof coating, so you can plan your trip in the shower.
Price: R96 from bookstores, outdoor stores and tourist information bureaus. Also available on CD.

A headlamp is a great gift, but it can be an expensive one. This torch, however, is cheaper than a Petzl. It has four brightness settings: a wide, soft floodlight, a spotlight for inspecting the chops, a red night-vision light that won’t attract insects, and a really bright setting.

Another great thing about the Croc is that it weighs only 18 kg and folds up to suitcase size, so it will fit into your car’s boot, no problem, and won’t take up a lot of space in the garage.
Yes, it will set you back a few shekels, but remember the Croc comes with a five-year guarantee and, looked after properly, should last you a lifetime.
