Mountain Hardwear EV2 Expedition Tent.

Why?
As anybody who has trekked to Everest base camp will tell you, Mountain Hardwear is one of the brands of choice when it comes to high-altitude expeditions. These guys make some of the toughest outdoor gear on the planet.

What is it?
The EV2 is one of the first models to use Mountain Hardwear’s new “Evolution Tension Arch” system. If you look at the picture, you’ll notice a lattice of grey strips built into the flysheet. These aren’t there to make the tent look pretty. The strips are made from extra-strong fabric and form a series of reinforcing arches that work in conjunction with the tent poles to create extra stability.
The tent weighs only 2,21 kg.

Does it do the job?
I haven’t used one of these tents, but Ed Viesturs, the first American to have climbed all 14 peaks more than 8 000 m above sea level, had the following to say about it: “The EV2 is functional, lightweight and bomber. This is the dream tent I’ve always wanted.”
I’m not going to argue with him.

Where can I buy one?
You’ll find one at Drifters, Mountain Mail Order and Ventures for Africa. Don’t expect much change from R8 000. Visit www.mountainhardwear.com
