Unpretentious good, solid boots
You need a degree in computer science to service the latest model Isuzu and you cannot slap new soles onto most modern hiking shoes when the old ones wear through. A classic pair of Jim Green boots, on the other hand, can be resoled.
These boots may not have Gore-Tex membranes and Kevlar laces, but the full-grain leather uppers can be attached to new rubber outsoles after a couple of Otter Trail hikes. Jim Green offers a complete boot refurbishment service, including soles, laces and eyelets, for about R150.
