Camping shower
Professional river rafting guide Marius la Cock has been in the business for over a decade, so he’s had plenty of time to fine-tune his packing list, including some home-made ideas.
“You can buy camping showers in any outdoor store, but they’re either too flimsy or too bulky so I decided to make my own. It works on the same principle: You have a 10-litre bag with a shower head attached. You fill the bag with hot water, hang it in a tree and gravity takes care of
the rest.
“Mine is made from PVC (the stuff used to make rubber ducks), so it’s strong enough to handle the wear and tear of regular trips down the river. I also put the shower head on the end of a one metre flexible pipe, so I can direct the spray to hard-to-reach places like under my arms.
“When filling the shower I boil five litres of water and mix it with five litres of cold water for the perfect temperature. The important thing to remember is to pour in the cold water first so that you don’t melt the bag!"
