Shipwreck Trail: Hike the Sunshine Coast

zoommore

The brand new Shipwreck Hiking and Canoe Trail between Port Alfred and the Fish River mouth passes two of the coastline’s oldest shipwrecks – the John, which stranded in the Fish River mouth in 1820, and the SS Kilbrennan, which sank in 1907 at the Three Sisters. The terrain is varied: beach, indigenous bush and farmland.

How long? On the five-day option, it’s a 52 km hike from Port Alfred to the Fish River mouth. On the six-day option there’s an additional 4 km hike on the final day and an 8 km paddle at Kleinemonde in the Nyala

Valley Game Reserve.
How difficult?
The terrain varies from flat to steep. You should be quite fit to hike it comfortably.
Do I carry all my gear? You can either carry all your supplies or there is the option to have most of your gear transported.
What’s the accommodation like? There are huts with beds, showers and braai facilities at every overnight stop.
What should I bring? The fee doesn’t include food, water or drinks.
How many friends can I bring? Minimum 4, maximum 12 per group; no children under 12.

Cost: R480 per person for the five-day option; R600 for the six-day option. To have your bags transported between the overnight stops costs R250 per day for the whole group.
