The Otter is king
It’s no fluke that the Otter Trail is South Africa’s favourite hiking trail. It’s a stunning route, from the Storms River Mouth all the way along the coast to Nature’s Valley. The trail is only 40 km long but it’s unforgettable. Every person who has hiked it knows it will always stay with you.
There are so many highlights: the waterfall where we had a picnic on the first day; the rough rock formations of Skilderkrans and its breathtaking view; stretching our legs on Bloubaai beach while the waves come crashing in; the adrenaline that pumped while we crossed the Bloukrans River; and that bittersweet moment when we finally arrived on the beach at Nature’s Valley.
But of all sights over the five days, this was the moment that best captured the spirit of the Otter for me.
It’s a stiff climb from the André hut to the top of these cliffs, but the new lookout about five minutes further on is an excellent place to catch your breath. Not many hikers were willing to risk it to the edge of the drop, but those who did were rewarded with a dizzying view out to sea and down at the rocks being pummelled by the waves.
