Swim in a mountain pool
There’s something very special about taking a dip in a rock pool. Maybe it’s because such pools are not always easy to reach, and that cold mountain water is so refreshing. Try one of these pools:
Crystal Pools. There are four natural swimming pools here. The entrance to the hike that takes you to Crystal Pools is about 7 km from Gordon’s Bay on the R44, in the direction of Betty’s Bay. You hike for about 45 minutes and a permit costs R15. (Sunbird Guest House, 021 856 1740).
Meiringspoort. Once the straight road from Beaufort West finally brings you to the folds of Meiringspoort, you can wash off the Great Karoo’s heat at the waterfall in the middle of the poort. Entry is free and it’s open until 7 pm in summer. (De Rust Tourism Bureau, 044 241 2109)
