Exploring caves on the West Rand is great value for money: the mixture of adventure, fear, adrenaline and sweat does wonders for the bond among family members and dinner table conversations. Our family did it with Wild Cave Adventures. 
They provide you with overalls and a torch with a battery pack like those used by miners. Then you abseil about 20 m down a hole in the middle of the veld into a cave. You walk around for about three hours in the most amazing dolomite caves, crawl through narrow passageways and see the most beautiful crystal halls and rock formations.
