Ablution and trash
Wild man and off-road guru Katot Meyer (founder of the Burchell’s 4x4 Trail in the Little Karoo) is passionate about looking after the environment.
He always carries these three inventive items in his beloved Land rover, “rook en Kook”.
Green bin
“You should always carry a bin in your vehicle. I don’t like black bags – they split easily and make a mess. Instead, I made this bin from an old 20-litre plastic oil drum.
My Landy uses lots of oil so I had one spare, but you should be able to pick one up easily from your local mechanic. I converted the lid so it flaps open with a hinge.”
Flush toilet
“Most people don’t know how to go to the toilet in the bush. They leave the toilet paper on the ground so that it blows around in the wind; or worse, they try to burn it, which could start a fire.
“With my spoeltoilet (a plastic 1,5-litre bottle filled with water and a dash of biodegradable soap) I don’t have to use toilet paper. Instead, when I’ve done my business I aim it at my rear end and give it a squeeze. The water does the rest and you can also use it to wash your hands.”
Ashtray
“I made this ashtray from a 250 ml Quali Juice bottle. any similar bottle will work. I don’t smoke myself, but I still carry it around so I can offer it to other people before they throw their stompies on the ground.
The plastic is strong and it’s got a screw-top lid. I fill about a third of the bottle with water to ensure the stompie goes out straight away. The water also kills the smell.”
