Shoot the spectre!
ROB WRITES: “I shot this from a balcony high up in a Sea Point flat as fog rolled in across Table Bay.
“I tried various tweaks in Photoshop and always ended up back at the original ‘as shot’ version, which you see here.”
TOAST SAYS: Oh, I like this so much; if it were a bed I’d want to sleep in it. Atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere - it’s not a feature of any Absa branch near you, but Rob’s photograph has it in spadeloads… yes, spadeloads.
Had he shot this in the middle of a clear day, the photo might still have been decent, but not as special as this mist-enhanced, veiled beauty. In this case, it is the shortage of light that makes the photo beautiful.
I’m also very glad that Rob decided to send in the original version and not one of the options he came up with in Photoshop, because nature’s special effects really were good enough in this instance.
Mist, light rain, dust and smoke in the sky can all cause this sort of filtered effect. The range of colours in the scene diminishes and is replaced by uniform, nuanced colours like the gentle oranges and greys on show here.
The composition is simple but effective, with the ship in the right third of the frame – it could even
have been a touch further to the right. Now, if we had a seagull or a helicopter somewhere to the left of the ship...
