Be prepared
BRUCE WRITES: “I took this photograph on North Island in New Zealand. Standing on the beach is my daughter, watching her children and their friend. I waited for the bird to fly into view before I pressed the button. It vaguely symbolises a spirit guarding over my family in a faraway country.”
TOAST SAYS: This is a really nice, moody landscape shot. The sunlight had already gone in the foreground, leaving the people and the bird in silhouette, the promontory of land graphic against the water with that lovely early-dusk sheen. On the horizon, the clouds are neatly stacked in a line, and the shapes and colours of those higher up add interest .
I like that Bruce waited for the bird to enter the frame. I usually keep my eye that’s not looking through the viewfinder open, to see what’s happening outside the frame. Much of photography depends on chance, but being prepared helps.
