Adventure Trails

Also known as 4x4 day trips

The Kruger National Park has various adventure trails spread throughout the park. Each runs through a different habitat, offering the visitor a unique and unforgettable experience. The adventure trails consist of a series of old management  roads. At most camps, only six vehicles are allowed onto each adventure trail per day, ensuring that those who book have an exclusive experience. This also minimises impact on the veld.

You have to book on the day that you want to drive and the trails are closed on rainy days or after big rains. You'll need a 4x4, but you may drive alone. You are provided with a map with directions and a series of GPS points. If you get into trouble, don't try to walk back. Try to phone the camp or, if there is no signal, wait for park officials to come and help.

You are allowed to get out of your vehicle on the adventure trails, but only where the habitat is open and if there are no dangerous animals close by. You must also stay within five to seven metres of the vehicle.

Also remember the following:

  • The adventure trails are not very difficult, so don't expect your 4x4 skills to be tested.
  • Bookings for adventure trails are made at the camp reception on the day of the drive.
  • Do not get out of your car near the normal tourist roads at the beginning and end of the adventure trails.
  • Leave the area in a neat and tidy state and bury all waste when nature calls. Don't start veld fires!
  • Never cross streams or drainage lines when they are in flood, rather turn around or wait for the water level to go down sufficiently.
  • Use 4x4 and low range when necessary so that you don't damage the road surface.
  • Drive slowly (15-25km/h)
  • You are not allowed to depart on the trails after 11:00. This ensures that you have enough time to complete the trail before dark.
  • Remember to report back to camp reception once you are back in camp.
  • Always take enough water, food and warm clothing/blankets when you go on adventure trails.
  • Do not take anything from the bush home…
