Leopards are extremely elusive animals and are not easily seen in the Kruger National Park. They prefer dense or rocky areas, and when they are seen, it is usually in the early morning or after dark. Many people believe they are only seen in trees, but this is not true. Although they may spend a lot of time feeding and resting in large trees, they are also found patrolling on roads or along riverbeds and streams. They also rest in thickets next to the road!
So, in order to give yourself the best change of seeing a leopard during your next Kruger National Park trip, drive one of the five roads below, and do so very early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Drive very slowly and search for spots. Look in all the large trees for resting/feeding leopards, and scan the thickets for any unusual shapes or patterns. Also listen for warning calls of impalas, vervet monkeys, baboons, tree squirrels and birds, because they will make a noise when they see a leopard.
