Orpen used to be both a camp and a gate, but the park entrance and day visitors area have now been moved away from the camp, which has made Orpen much more private and enjoyable.
Orpen camp is very small and has no campsite or safari tents. Visitors can stay in only a handful of bungalows or cottages. Birding in camp is great and the swimming pool overlooks a small waterhole right outside camp. No other swimming pools in the main camps of the Kruger National Park allow you to view elephants, or any other animals, right from the pool! The camp has a small shop, but no restaurant.
Orpen's two sister camps, Tamboti and Maroela, are close by on the banks of the Timbavati River. Tamboti only has safari tents and Maroela is for campers only.

3 must-drive roads:
H7 for Big 5 sightings
S39 south for scenery
S126 for lions and elephants
Look for these animals:
Cheetahs are often found on the H7 – sometimes close to Orpen, but more often near the cross with the S36 and S39 south.
Black backed jackals are often found on the H7 near Orpen gate; look for them in the open areas.
Buffaloes and elephants can be seen in the Timbavati riverbed along the H7.
Keep your eyes open for serval on the S106. They prefer tall grass and are seen early mornings or at night.
