This photo was taken from the H1-6 south and shows how close Letaba is to the bank of the massive Letaba River.
Letaba's river view is undoubtedly the best in the whole Kruger National Park! Yes, Olifants camp has a great river view as well, but here you are much lower and therefore feel like you are almost part of the river and the astonishing wildlife that it attracts.
A paved walkway winds all along the river's edge past the river bungalows. Massive trees provide ample shade and attract many birds. All along the walkway you will find benches with spectacular views over the riverbed. Some visitors don't even leave camp, but rather make themselves comfortable on one of the benches with a bird book, pair of binoculars and a cooler box at hand.

Many visitors congregate at the edge of the river in the late afternoon. |
A paved walkway runs all along the Letaba River and has benches located along the way. |
A number of benches are in front of the cafeteria and restaurant, and many people gather here in the late afternoon to watch the sunset and to search for animals and birds that come down to the water. On most days you will see hippo, crocodile, waterbuck, elephant and buffalo in the riverbed. Baboons, impala, warthog and giraffe are also seen. Some visitors are lucky enough to see lion and leopard as well!
Birds include Egyptian goose, yellow-billed stork, African fish-eagle, grey heron and a variety of waders. Look overhead for pearl-breasted, lesser-striped and grey-rumped swallows, along with a variety of swifts, including horus swifts. Also look for European nightjars in the palm trees near the restaurant and for red-winged starlings near the bat boxes along the walkway. I have seen these aggressive birds remove a bat from the box and kill it below on the grass.

Look out for bat boxes next to the river walkway. They were built to serve as special bat houses.
