Lower Sabie game viewing

Lower Sabie is located in the south-eastern part of the Kruger National Park and is known for its diverse habitats. The areas immediately south and north of Lower Sabie are very open and great for plains game and cheetahs. The area directly west of Lower Sabie, along the Sabie River, is more dense and attracts many elephants, buffaloes and leopards. All the major predators are common in this area and birdwatching is fantastic.

What do you want to see at Lower Sabie?

This is just a short overview of roads in the Lower Sabie area:

Predators
cheetah

Lower Sabie is probably the best camp in the Kruger National Park for cheetah! You can either drive south towards Crocodile Bridge on the S28 or north on the S128, S29 or H10. These four roads are excellent cheetah hunting grounds (both for game-viewer and predator). Driving north on the H10 early in the morning gives you an excellent chance of seeing lion as well! If it's leopard you're looking for, the H4-1 Sabie River road towards Nkuhlu picnic site is probably your best bet, although the H4-2 to Crocodile Bridge may also produce leopard sightings. The H4-2 is also known for wild dog sightings! The grassy plains north of Lower Sabie is one of the best areas in the park to see the elusive serval cat.

Elephants and rhinos
elephant

The H10 tar road between Lower Sabie and Tshokwane picnic site is an excellent road for elephants. In summer, you can easily see more than 100 in one drive! White rhinos are also found along the H10 and all the other gravel roads north of Lower Sabie. If you are looking for black rhino, try the thickets south of camp, especially on the S82.

Buffaloes
buffalo

Lower Sabie is the perfect camp to search for buffalo. These bulk grazers prefer the large open plains that are so abundant in this area. Herds of more than a thousand may be seen from time to time, especially in summer when food is plentiful. The H10 tar road (north of camp) and S28 gravel road (south of camp) are good starts, but any of the roads in the area may produce memorable buffalo sightings. Lions often follow the big herds!

Giraffes and zebras
zebra

The best road for both zebra and giraffe near Lower Sabie is the S28 gravel road that runs between Lower Sabie and Crocodile Bridge. You should see multiple herds of both species along this road, any time of the day.

Scenery
The H10

By far my favourite stretch of road near Lower Sabie is the section of the H10 tar road that passes Munthse Koppie. The vegetation is open with large trees and on one side (west) runs a small river, and on the other (east) is the stunning Muntshe Koppie. I always drive this section very slowly… to enjoy the scenery and to look for lions, which are often found along this stretch. Cheetahs are also frequently seen here.

Birds
yellow-throated long-claw

Lower Sabie is one of the best birding spots in the south of Kruger. The open grasslands attract birds that are seldom seen in other parts of Kruger, including the yellow-throated long-claw. All the gravel roads immediately north of camp are good for quails, francolins, black-bellied korhaan and kori bustard. In summer you will also see many European rollers here. Along the Sabie River, you will find Burchell's coucal, and at Sunset Dam, look for three-banded plover, grey heron and blacksmith lapwing. In summer you will also find common sandpiper, yellow-billed stork and ruff here. Look for pied and giant kingfisher, goliath heron and little egret at the bridge that crosses the Sabie River on the H10, as well as a variety of swallows.

Remember, any road has the potential to produce incredible sightings. Luck certainly plays a role, but by driving specific roads at suitable times of the day, you can drastically improve your chances of seeing specific species. Visit our Handy tips page for more game-viewing tips.
