Pretoriuskop game viewing

Pretoriuskop is situated in the south-west of the Kruger National Park in an area dominated by sourveld. Sourveld is often characterised by tall grasses and is generally not very good for grazing,  it does, however, act some rare antelope species such as sable, tsessebe and Lichtenstein's hartebeest. The area around Pretoriuskop contains a few very distinct koppies or rocky outcrops, which can be seen from miles away. Birding in this area is also very good.

What do you want to see at Pretoriuskop?

This is just a short overview of roads in the Pretoriuskop area:

Predators
leopard

Despite the tall grass and sourveld, which are not as productive as the open sweetveld areas, predator sightings around Pretoriuskop are great! Lions can be found on any of the small loop roads around camp, as well as the main
H1-1
Napi Road, especially early in the morning. This is also one of the few areas to see lions on rocks, so keep an eye out on the rocky outcrops. Leopards are also seen here, but a better idea would be to drive the S1 Doispane Road to see these elusive cats. The S1 is also good for cheetahs and spotted hyaenas. Wild dogs are sometimes seen in the vicinity of Phabeni Gate and on the H1-1 Napi Road.

Elephants and rhinos
elephants

The best road for elephants in the area is probably the H1-1 Napi Road. They are often found in the region of Transport Dam. White rhinos are common on all the roads around Pretoriuskop and may even be seen feeding between the massive boulders on the S10 Shabeni Koppie loop road. If you are lucky, you might see black rhino on one of the many loops around camp!

Giraffes and zebras
zebra

The tall sourveld grassland is not ideal for plains grazers like zebra and blue wildebeest. The best place to find them would be around Nyamundwa Dam on the S1 (impalas are also very common here) or in the vicinity of Ship Mountain on the H2-2 Voortrekker Road. Giraffes are common on the S3 river road along the Sabie River.

Rare antelopes
tsessebe

Pretoriuskop is well known for its rare antelope species, which prefer the tall grass vegetation. Species that can be found include tsessebe, sable, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, reedbuck and oribi.

Scenery
shabeni koppie

By far my favourite road near Pretoriuskop is the S10 Shabeni Loop which winds around the impressive Shabeni Koppie. The road hugs the side of the koppie and winds through stunning thickets where birdlife is fantastic and kudus are plentiful. The elevation also provides stunning views over the surrounding areas. This is one of the few places where you can have dramatic sights of lion, leopard and even rhino among the rocks!

Birds

Birding in and around Pretoriuskop is fantastic. The unique vegetation type is host to a variety of species that prefer the tall grasslands. One of the best roads for birding is the S8 loop road, south of camp. The birds on this road tend to be very relaxed and are easily photographed. The S10 is also great for birding. For waterbirds, visit Mestel Dam (S3 south), Nyamundwa Dam (S1) or Shitlave Dam (H1-1).

Remember, any road has the potential to produce incredible sightings. Luck certainly plays a role, but by driving specific roads at suitable times of the day, you can drastically improve your chances of seeing specific species. Visit our Handy tips page for more game-viewing tips.
