Shingwedzi game viewing

Shingwedzi is situated in the northern mopaneveld region of the Kruger National Park. It has some of the most beautiful river roads in the whole park and is definitely one of the best areas for elephant and buffalo, while leopards are also found along the riverbeds. The open plains north of Shingwedzi are some of the best for roan antelope and eland, and the little Sharpe's grysbok may be found along the riverbeds around camp. Birding in this area is also fantastic!

What do you want to see in the vicinity of Shingwedzi?

This is just a short overview of roads in the Shingwedzi area:

spotted hyaena
Predators

Shingwedzi is one of those camps that either surpasses all your predator expectations or disappoints you by being very quiet. It is very unpredictable. However, the northern tip of the S50 always gives you a good chance of seeing leopard. Spotted hyaenas sometimes den on the side of the H1-6 north, about 7km from Shingwedzi. Lions and leopards are often seen on the S52.

elephant

Elephants

Few people leave Shingwedzi without having at least one memorable elephant sighting! Generally, though, you will have a number of fantastic elephant sightings, because they are plentiful on all the roads around camp. Look for them in the Shingwedzi riverbed, especially at the S135 small cement bridge behind camp. The S52 Red Rocks Loop is also a great road for elephants.

buffalo

Buffalo

It's relatively easy to find buffalo at Shingwedzi: just drive along any stretch of the Shingwedzi River and you are bound to come across a few old bulls or even a large herd drinking and resting in the riverbed (take the H1-6 north or the S52). Buffaloes are also regularly seen in the Mphongolo riverbed on the S56, as well as sometimes from the high bridge over the Shingwedzi River (where the H1-7 splits from the H1-6 north).

crocodile

Crocodiles

Any road that runs along the Shingwedzi RIver gives you a chance to see crocodiles. Look for them where the S52 crosses the Shingwedzi River, or from the high bridge where the H1-6 north and H1-7 come together. The best place for crocodiles is the small cement bridge on the S135 behind camp. When there's water in the river, they often congregate at the edge of the bridge, waiting for fish to jump straight into their jaws.

S56

Scenery

Although the S52 is very scenic and has two spectacular lookout points at Red Rocks and Tshanga, the S56 Mphongolo Loop is probably the most beautiful in the area, and possibly the whole park! The gravel road winds through some magnificent riverine forest with large trees and spectacular views over the riverbed. It will take you hours to drive from one end to the other, simply because you will want to soak up the area's beauty.

birds

Birds

Some very special birds are found in the Shingwedzi region, including thrush nightingale and collared palm-thrush, both of which have been seen in camp. After good rains, you will find grey herons, yellow-billed storks and great egrets gathering at the S135 low water bridge. Also look for green-backed herons here. At Kanniedood Dam you should see Egyptian goose, African fish-eagle and a variety of smaller birds like kingfishers and swallows.

Remember, any road has the potential to produce incredible sightings. Luck certainly plays a role, but by driving specific roads at suitable times of the day, you can drastically improve your chances of seeing specific species. Visit our Handy tips page for more game-viewing tips.
