Skukuza is situated in the southern part of the Kruger National Park and is the park's headquarters. The roads can get very busy around camp, especially over the holidays. Fortunately there are many routes to choose from, running through a great variety of habitats: from open plains to dense thickets. Leopards are common along the Sabie River, and lions and cheetahs are also seen in the area.Skukuza is one of the few areas in the park where you might see black rhino, and it's also the best region in the park for wild dog sightings!

Predators |
In a good week, Skukuza can be extremely productive in terms of predator sightings, but at the same time, it can be equally disappointing. Lions can be found on virtually every tar road around camp, especially early in the morning. I have found the S1 and H1-1 to be best for lion. If it's leopard you're looking for, I would suggest driving slowly along the H4-1 in the early morning, or try the H11 and S1. The best place to look for cheetah near Skukuza is on the S30 Salitje Road, especially in the centre where it opens up. Skukuza is the best camp in Kruger for wild dogs, which may be found on any road in the area. I have seen them most often on the H11 to Paul Kruger Gate and the eastern part of the S1 Doispane Road. |

Elephants and rhinos |
Skukuza is great for elephant sightings. I have seen big herds on the H1-2 between Skukuza and Tshokwane picnic site, and the H4-1 river road can be equally productive. The S1 is also a good place to search for elephants – I have seen some very large bulls here! Black and white rhinos may both be found in the Skukuza area. Try the S65 N'waswitshaka Road for both, or search for white rhinos on the S1 and black rhinos in the area around camp. |

Giraffes and zebras |
I have often found giraffes on the H11 tar road between Skukuza and Paul Kruger Gate. Another good place to search for giraffes is on the S114 gravel road that runs past Renosterkoppies Dam. Zebras are often seen on the S1, especially closer to Phabeni Gate where the vegetation is not as dense as around Skukuza. Also try the S4 for zebra. |

Scenery |
The S1 Doispane Road is not only fantastic for game viewing, but is also one of the most scenic in the Skukuza region. My favourite section is the first 10-odd kilometres in the east. Here, the road runs through open veld with tall trees on either side of it. There are also a few rocky outcrops along the way. This section has a magical feel in the early morning and late afternoon, and it is fortunately close to camp. |

Birds |
Skukuza is a birdwatcher's dream, not only in camp, but also on a drive. In camp, look for green pigeons in the big fig trees next to the river. Lake Panic bird hide is about 20 minutes from camp and is the best place for an afternoon of birding. Look for herons, kingfishers, ducks and geese, thick-knees, gallinules and jacanas, among many others. The hide is also great for afternoon photography. The H3 tar road is excellent for rollers, especially in summer when the migrants are present. The H4-1 river road produces sightings of Burchell's coucal, carmine bee-eater (summer) and a great variety of raptors. |
