Tshokwane game viewing

There is no main camp in the immediate vicinity of Tshokwane picnic site in the south-central part of the Kruger National Park. The vegetation is diverse in this area, but is generally dominated by open savannas. This is a great area for elephants and probably the best in the park for sable antelope, especially in the areas just west of the picnic site. Nkumbe, one of the most spectacular lookout points, is situated just south of Tshokwane.

What do you want to see in the vicinity of Tshokwane?

This is just a short overview of roads in the Tshokwane area:

Predators
lions

I have had many lion sightings in the vicinity of Tshokwane, especially to the north-west of the picnic site. The southern S36 Nhlanguleni Road, the S34 Munywini Road and the S33 Vutomi Road may all produce memorable sightings of Kruger's largest cat. The dense vegetation of the S33 and S34 are also ideal for leopards. The best area for cheetah in this region is probably the S35 Lindanda Road or the southern part of the S37 Trichardt Road – both are nice and open. The H1-2 to Skukuza may also produce cheetah sightings.

Elephants and rhinos

Elephants are very common in the Tshokwane region. On a good day, you can easily spot a few different herds in the immediate vicinity of the picnic site. The H1-2, H1-3 and H10 are all great for elephants. White rhinos are seen in the open areas along the H1-3 between Tshokwane and Satara, while the elusive black rhino may be found in any of the thickets around here.

Giraffes and zebras

The open areas north-east of Tshokwane on the S35 and S37 Trichardt Road are great for zebras and giraffes. The short S32 gravel road past Orpen Dam is also a great area to find both species, especially giraffe. I have had very memorable giraffe sightings on the S33 Vutomi Road.

Scenery

By far my favourite road in the vicinity of Tshokwane is the S33 Vutomi Road. The road is quiet (in terms of vehicles) and incredibly scenic, passing the beautiful Vutomi Dam which usually has a herd of waterbuck close by. The narrow, dark road has a reasonable road surface, and stunning vegetation. The S35 Lindanda Road is also very scenic!

Birds

The H1-2 tar road, south-west of Tshokwane, has a number of dams and waterholes along the way that are all great for birding and are home to species like Egyptian geese, white-faced ducks, hamerkops, blacksmith lapwings, African spoonbills and darters, and a variety of bee-eaters, kingfishers and other waterbirds.

Remember, any road has the potential to produce incredible sightings. Luck certainly plays a role, but by driving specific roads at suitable times of the day, you can drastically improve your chances of seeing specific species. Visit our Handy tips page for more game-viewing tips.
