(An overnight hide on the S51)

Sable Hide is one of two overnight hides in the Kruger National Park and is situated next to the Sable Dam near Phalaborwa Gate, on the S51 gravel loop. During the day people can come and watch birds and animals visit the water. You may see hippos, crocodiles and elephants, as well as lions in this area. Birds are plentiful and include storks, vultures, Egyptian geese and many other waterbirds.
For a unique experience at the hide, you can book it for overnight accommodation. Sable Hide sleeps nine people on fold-down beds that are locked against the hide's back wall during the day. You may only book the hide for one night and fold down the beds 30 minutes before gate-closing time in the afternoon. You have to be out of the hide again 30 minutes after gate-opening time the following morning.
Sable Hide also has a bathroom with a toilet for overnight visitors (not for day visitors) and a braai area under the stars, situated behind the hide in an enclosed area to keep you and your car safe from wildlife. Bookings can be made through SANParks.

Beds can fold down from the wall. |
The height of the hide windows are perfect for lying on your bed reading, while keeping an eye and ear out for animals. |
When you book Sable Hide for the night, you will receive bedding, a light and keys to unlock the beds from Phalaborwa Gate when you check in. Remember to take your own water, wood, cutlery and insect repellant. You can also request a water bottle and braai grid from Phalaborwa Gate. Remember to bring insect repellent in summer and extra warm clothing and bedding in winter, because it can get very cold here!

There is no electricity at Sable Hide, but you will receive a lamp when you check in at Phalaborwa Gate.
One evening a pride of lions arrived at Sable Hide just as the sun set. They roared in front of the hide for the rest of the night! I suggest booking the hide at full moon, which will enable you to see the dam's surroundings through a pair of binoculars. Look for little tree frogs in the hide at night.
