Shipandani Hide

(An overnight hide just south of Mopani)

Shipandani is one of two overnight hides in the Kruger National Park an is situated just south of Mopani on the gravel road that leads to the S142 Shongololo Loop's southern end. During the day people can come and watch birds and animals visit the water. You will probably see hippos here, but the waterhole in front of the hide is relatively small and has a steep bank on the opposite bank, making it difficult for animals to come and drink. Also look out for crocodiles.

Birding is good with black-smith lapwings, green-backed and grey herons and three-banded plovers using the area. Also look for the elusive white-backed night heron, which is sometimes seen in the dense vegetation on the opposite side of the water, right opposite the hide.

If you wish to spend more time at  the hide, you can book it for an overnight stay. Shipandani Hide sleeps six people on fold-down beds that are locked against the hide's back wall during the day. You may only book the hide for one night and fold down the beds 30 minutes before gate-closing time in the afternoon. You have to be out of the hide again 30 minutes after gate-opening time the following morning.

Shipandani has a bathroom with a toilet and a braai area under the stars, situated behind the hide within an enclosed area. Don't go wandering outside the hide at night! Bookings can be made through SANParks.

BBQ Area   Beds inside the hide

Shipandani has a small braai area behind
the hide.

The inside of the hide is cozy at night.

When you book Shipandani Hide for the night, you will receive bedding and a light from Mopani camp when you check in. You'll also receive keys to unlock the beds. Remember to take your own water, wood, cutlery and insect repellant. You can request a water bottle and braai grid from Mopani.

hippos

There are generally hippos at Shipandani.

Sometimes the sound of hippos will keep you awake at night, but it is incredible to hear them so close by! The hide has many mosquitoes in summer, so remember to take insect repellant. Also bear in mind that it gets very hot in summer and can get uncomfortable. Take extra warm clothes along in winter.
