S30 Salitje road

(Gravel road)

s30

The S30 Salitje road is loved by some and avoided by others. I personally love the road and have often found leopards along the western tip, where the road runs on the northern bank of the Sabie River opposite Nkuhlu picnic site. Here you will also find a strange fence that keeps elephants out, but allows smaller animals through. The fence is part of an exclusion experiment. To find out more about this, read the sign along the way. This western tip is relatively dense, broad-leaved veld, making it ideal for leopards.

The scenic S30 Salitje Road.

About 10km from the western tip, the S30 starts opening up, with a few large open plains and a waterhole situated more or less halfway along the road. There are always impalas in this area, which in turn attract cheetahs – which are very often seen along this stretch. In terms of raptor sightings, the S30 is generally consistent. Look for bateleur, tawny eagle and secretary bird in the open areas.

Cheetahs are often found in the central,
open section of the S30 Salitje Road.

The S30 should ideally be driven up (north-west) in the morning and down (south-east) in the afternoon, so that you have the sun behind you.
