Jungle Lodge is close to Point Denis, Gabon’s most established seaside resort, which is popular with French expats.

The beachfront at Point Denis is a breeding site for giant leatherback turtles. Guards patrol the beach to protect them.

We saw this woodland kingfisher when we stayed at Lambaréné. These birds are intra-African migrants, and spend the summer months in southern Africa.

From Libreville we caught a cross-country train to the east, a seven-hour journey through the heart of the jungle.

It’s distressing to see how much logging is going on in this timber-rich country.

Me, Dumbie, Chad, Lawrence and Speedy outside our favourite restaurant in Libreville, where we could get coffee and breadrolls with butter. Five-star luxury for us!

We absorbed every sound and movement as we walked in the Lopé National Park with our guide John (right), pictured here with Lawrence.
