The Nassob campsite is jackal-proof, as long as you close the gate behind you.

Early morning and late afternoon Kalahari light is king. Keen photographers should be the first out of the gate in the morning to get some of the best photo opportunities.

The closer you get to Mata-Mata, the better your chance of seeing giraffes.

"And then I nearly died..." Hienie Snyders explains to Sid Farnie what happened on the day the puff adder bit him.

Hendrik Bezuidenhout"s Datsun 300GL has seen 18 years of service in the park. He works at Nassob. "This is the Groen Mamba. My wife put a dent in it; she drove into a tree. Once, a lion also sat on the bonnet," he told me.

Suzy the African wild cat is often around the Kieliekrankie camp.

The Namaqua sandgrouse (pictured) searches for water in the hour or two after sunrise, while the similar-looking double-banded sandgrouse drinks at dusk.
