Hannelie van As shares some of her pictures she took on a recent trip to the Tankwa Karoo.
There is a place where it feels as if you are truly driving into the heart of South Africa. You leave civilisation behind with the dust in the wake of your car, together with anything weighing down on your heart or shoulders. This is the road to the Tankwa Karoo National Park. And now that the wild flowers are blooming, the otherwise barren landscape is transformed into a brilliant display of colour and scent.
“The park has thus far had a very good winter,” says Elmaré van Wyk, duty manager at the park.
“We’ve had an above-average rainfall, which means an early flowering season. The veld is beautiful and there are flowers everywhere. Around Pramberg there are already fields of yellow ragwort, Namaqualand marigold, purple and yellow vygies, salad thistle and bokhorinkies.”
I went to see it for myself, armed with a camera, and once more this part of the Karoo touched my soul. The flower extravaganza is just one more reason to get out there and fill your lungs with crisp Karoo air.
