Strandloper: Beachcomb with a backpack

The Strandloper Trail starts at Kei Mouth. Most of the 59 km trail runs through the state-owned East London Coastal Reserve.

At the end of Day 2 you can take a dip in the Quko River at Double Mouth.

On this small stretch, porcelain shards and beads still wash up from the Santo Espírito, a Portuguese carrack that sank in 1608.

The grey Weimaraner who lives in Kei Mouth might have a lame hind leg, but he still invites himself along on the hikes.

There are 500 different kinds of shells around East London; almost 75% of those occur only in South Africa.

The Double Mouth hut, where you usually sleep on the second night, is right next to the waves.

You’ll find turkeys, chickens and, occasionally, a human in the cattle dip tank at the Ninky Noo bar.

The coastal forest at Cintsa West is the only non-seaside part of the trail.

From Michaela’s restaurant in Cintsa East you have a 180 ° view of the coast.
