The Egg Man spreads his positive message
Who’s that guy with the eggs on his head you see at festivals and in Cape Town’s city centre? The Egg Man is a street performer with an optimistic message: “Everything must be life, everything must shine, and be positive,” he says.
You may have seen him at the KKNK in Oudtshoorn, the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, the Whale Festival in Hermanus or the Stellenbosch Street Festival. This year, you can expect to be entertained by him at all these and several other festivals, though his plans are somewhat secret.
“Maybe you’ll see me where you don’t expect,” he says mischievously.
You are guaranteed, however, to see him in the centre of Cape Town whenever he’s not at a festival. The Egg Man (real name: Gregory da Silva) performs every day at Green Market Square, to the delight of tourists and locals.
With a brilliant smile and a fantastical headdress that weighs up to 25kg, Gregory greets people with a newly created display of his symbolic art every day.
He has shared his talent with children by teaching them about art, performance and dance through his Project for Africa programme.
“Children in Africa need our help,” he says. “Education is knowledge, and knowledge is power.”
