Teabag art
Original T-Bag Designs is another attraction and is fast becoming a popular tourist destination. It was founded 11 years ago with the aim of creating sustainable jobs for previously disadvantaged people from the Imizamo Yethu Township.
Original T-Bag Designs employs artists who use recycled tea bags to create an range of greeting cards, gift bags, coasters, cell phone bags and other handmade products.
A British former teacher, Jill Heyes, worked with a group of women seeking employment and taught them how to transform ordinary tea bags into works of art adorned with traditional African decorations. Today the company provides employment to 20 ‘tea-baggers.’
Original T-Bag Designs can be found in Hout Bay’s Mainstream Shopping Centre and at the V&A Waterfront. For more information on the initiative visit www.tbagdesigns.co.za, or contact them at info@tbagdesigns.co.za or 021 790 0887.
