Thousands of barn swallows for Kimberley

Thousands of Barn Swallows have found an ideal spot to roost in the De Beers hole, one of seven massive holes in Kimberley. This is the second consecutive year that the swallows have used this site, although they have roosted elsewhere in the vicinity in previous years. 
 
The De Beers hole offers an ideal roosting area of reedbeds growing in a damp substrate, and predation from terrestrial predators would be limited. Importantly, being below ground level, it presumably offers good shelter from night-time winds. 

There is a very good viewing platform from which the birds can be observed.
