VIDEO: Big wave surfer breaks back
Cape Town surfer James Taylor filmed himself as he was surfing a wave that broke his back.
The dramatic moments before a wave broke big wave surfer James Taylor’s back were caught on film thanks to a ‘surfcam’, mounted on his board.
Taylor (33), who is form Milnerton, Cape Town, is recovering from the accident which happened on the 22nd of April as he “pulled into a barrel” at a beach break at Noordhoek beach.
“I got drilled into the sand bank and broke my L1 vertebra,” Taylor writes on his website, where he has now also posted a video clip titled The Barrel that Broke my Back.
The video clip clearly shows the size of the waves the big wave champion was surfing on the day as well as him paddling back to the beach – with broken back and all.
