The 6th annual Struisbaai 5 Spesie Angling Festival will be hosted on 9-10 March 2012 by the Ashton Rock and Surf Club who will be assisted by the Two Oceans Fishing Kayak Club.
5 Spesie develops rock & surf, kayak and other angling sports amongst the youth in the Cape Town, Overberg and Breërivier areas. They also encourage the whole family to participate which makes this a unique event in the Western Cape.
The majority of the junior participants are from previously disadvantaged communities. The transport, food, fishing gear, etc. of the previous disadvantaged communities’ children are funded by the project and its sponsors.
The event's major objective is to empower children from disadvantaged communities to enjoy the sport of fishing as an alternative to gangs, drugs, poaching, etc.
A total of new 86 rod and reel combos with fishing tackles have been distributed to disadvantage schools, Robertson Children’s home, Struisbaai Halfway House, etc.
The children and their teachers will spend the day with experienced anglers to assist them. The young anglers will compete against each other in teams and as individuals. They will be taught the basics of fishing, importance of catch and release and cleaning up our beaches. The club will provide food, drinks and something sweet during the day. The days end with a prize giving where the youngsters will be rewarded for their efforts.
