1. Thelma & Louise
During a weekend away to escape their rather dreary lives, Louise kills a man who tries to rape Thelma, and they go on the run from the police. While things go from bad to worse, the two women discover their strengths. The ending is a shocker, but you know it couldn’t have ended any other way.
2. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert
Three drag artists from Sydney get a cabaret gig at a hotel in Alice Springs in the Australian Outback, and they decide to travel there in a bus named Priscilla. On the way they sing, sew costumes, get lost, have a breakdown, meet new people and disclose secrets. It’s funny and over the top, but also very moving.
3. Paris, Texas
The movie starts with a man with amnesia wandering in a bleak landscape. His brother takes him in, and helps him to get his memory back of his life before he left his wife and son four years before. The Texan scenery is used to great effect; it’s a beautifully shot movie.
4. Raising Arizona
This offbeat comedy stars Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter as an ex-con and a cop who marry, but find out they can’t have children. So they decide a rich family with quintuplets won’t miss one baby. It remains funny no matter how many times you watch it.
5. My Own Private Idaho
It’s a surreal, sad movie, but the acting by River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves is memorable. They play two male hustlers, Mike and Scott, who live on the streets, use drugs and sell their bodies. Mike, who suffers from narcolepsy, is obsessed with finding his mother who abandoned him as a child. Scott is the rebellious son of a rich family. Together, they embark on a quest to find Mike’s mother, traveling from Portland to Idaho to Italy and back.
